EFFECT OF SLEEP ON ATTENTION

Daily Attention lapses (PVT lapses) nearly multiply by 10X in a 10 day study as a result of cumulative lack of sleep (5 hrs / night), even with weekend recovery sleep.  Extrapolating the graph to a 1 month, the attention lapses may increase to 60+ times a day, so no longer can focus!

INFOMATION OVERLOAD & THE TRICKY ART OF SINGLE TASKING

Levitin is a neuroscientist. He should know. But it's 8:30 a.m., and I've got 16 Internet tabs on my computer, three more tabs on my phone, two opened emails, a pending phone call and a scrolling Twitter timeline. And I'm doing perfectly well. I'm clearly an exception.  Of course, I am not. As Levitin put it to Note to Self, "You're not actually doing four or five things at once, because the brain doesn't work that way." Instead, "you're rapidly shifting from one thing to the next, depleting neural resources as you go."

Other examples highlight a more deliberate effort to monopolize your time. Consider Instagram’s implementation of a variable-ratio reward schedule. As explained in this 60 Minutes interview, Instagram’s notification algorithms will sometimes withhold “likes” on your photos to deliver them in larger bursts. So when you make your post, you may be disappointed to find less responses than you expected, only to receive them in a larger bunch later on.

“Research for UC Irvine show the following data on office interruptions.  12 mins 40 secs (Avg time spent on a task before being interrupted), 25 mins 26 secs (average time elapsed before returning to work on the same task), 15 mins (Avg time required after resuming a difficult task to get back into the same level of intense concentration), 2.8 secs (length of interruption required to cause subjects to commit twice the number of computer errors).”

VALUE OF TRACKING EMOTIONAL STATE

Verizon CEO Vestberg explained his approach to leadership and how he stays grounded, in order to be effective. Speaking candidly, Vestberg says he focuses on what he does well and ‘grades’ himself every day.  ...   So I started 2009 to grade myself every morning, the day after, from a scale to 0 to 10.
